Picture the scene, you’ve lounged by the pool all day, dipping in the water, sipping a margarita and shamelessly workin’ on that tan. The sun is now setting, the crickets are rustling in the background, you’ve showered and feel like a new woman so it’s time to hit the town. You’ve moisturised every inch of your body and you’re smelling like a Pina Colada, dreams. You’re ready to slip into that new maxi dress that you’d never wear at home but there’s something about the air, you’re feeling adventurous and you’re ready to attempt to salsa with a local man named Julio. Oh baby.
When I think of hot summer nights (not that kind, calm down) these are the products that spring to mind to make you as flawless as Bey on the beach in the Drunk in Love video.
Hit me with the Base
A stunning summer foundation for me is the NARS Sheer Glow – £33. This is a beautifully dewy yet light foundation providing buildable coverage with a satin finish. A buildable foundation is preferable over summer because you want it light enough that you can still see your freckles underneath (or as my mum used to tell my sister when she was little – they’re fairy kisses) but have the potential to cover up any blemishes or hyper-pigmentation.
Brows Brows Brows
We want an effortless, understated look for the evening and HD brows don’t exactly scream low key. The fluffier the brow, the better. I recently tried out Glossier for the first time and I have to say I’m really impressed. Affordable, simple products. The Boy Brow – £14 helps us achieve that brushed through look in seconds. Just sweep and go. Less time on brows – more time for mojitos.
Gloss the lids
Full blown eye looks really aren’t necessary when you’re abroad and I prefer and more basic look. To keep things really simple, sweep a cream highlighter across your lids, it’ll catch the light beautifully but not be too over the top. I love the colour of the Topshop Beauty Limited Edition Glow Pot in Gleam– £5. It’s a little too dark as a highlight for me but if you have a deeper skin tone, pat it on the top of your cheekbones too for added va va voom.
Glow me up
Your skin and eyes are looking glossy so naturally we can’t forget about our highlight. We all know I love a blinding highlight but again, with the heat and more minimal look, I don’t want a holographic, powder based highlight but a glitterier (is that a word?), smooth glow. I received the Ciate London Dewy Stix Glow– £22 in a beauty subscription box (Cohorted, bit pricy at £30pm but veryyyy worth it). I like this because it suits all skin tones. LIAR I hear you roar, there’s no such thing as a highlight that can suit a multitude of tones but this highlight has no pigment. Instead, it’s a silky balm with fine gold speckles that make your skin look like skin but wayyyy better.
There is legit nothing better than a minimal glossy makeup look paired with a killer lip colour. NARS Matte Lip Pencil – £21 in Red Square is a stunning red/coral shade. It looks so rich and feels velvety smooth. Better yet, it stays on for hours and doesn’t transfer, perfect so that evidence doesn’t appear on Julio’s face later on in the evening…
Shimmer me happy
It’s all well and good your face being glossy and flawless but it doesn’t hurt to extend the party to the rest of your skin. I adore a good shimmery body oil, not only because it catches the light beautifully but it also adds a little bronze to your skin in case your tan is taking its time in appearing. I have tried a lot of shimmer oils but they never give me the wow factor I desire. The No7 Beautiful Skin Shimmer Body Oil – £12 is the one for me, feels silky on the skin and gives you a beautiful shimmer. It’s usually £12, but the No7 Boots voucher runs to July 1st offering you £5 off all skincare.
Look like a goddess, smell like a goddess
For the days when we’re looking more pink than bronze, after sun is necessary over that Body Shop soufflé we brought with us. Although aloe vera will soothe that angry burn, it doesn’t smell as sexy as we’re looking. I always was a fan of the Estee Lauder limited edition Bronze Goddess perfume that comes out every year. It smells dreamy but at a whopping £58 it’s extremely overpriced for a perfume thats base note is coconut, it’s not worth it as a seasonal perfume. As an alternative, I discovered the NEXT Summer Sun Perfume which smells EXACTLY the same and it starts at a sweet £8 for 30ml. Pretty sweet eh? It also comes in a handy roll on which is perfect for those travelling with hand luggage only.
You look sexy, you smell sexy and most importantly you’re feeling sexy. Now go find yourself some sangria and a Julio.
