The secret to long wearing makeup, it’s what we all want to know isn’t it? If you ask any beauty professional they’ll tell you good makeup starts with a good skincare routine. The better you prepare your base, the better your makeup will apply and the better (yeah I said it 3 times) it will last. *But…but* I hear you say. Good thing is this isn’t a skincare post and I know that wasn’t the answer you were looking for. We want to be told there’s a quick fix, a plan b, so if you’re not prepared to throw away the Simple makeup wipes and re-vamp your bathroom cabinet just yet then don’t fret!
Here is my pick of my favourite tried and tested primers guaranteed to keep you looking fabulous all-day long.
Best Oil Free Primer: Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer £26
There’s a reason this is the holy grail for primers. I have oily/combination skin, by midday my nose resembles a pan ready to fry an egg so oil free primers are an essential part of my makeup routine. This is one of the only primers that keeps the shine at bay. I concentrate this on my target areas – the nose and chin. This also doubles up as a pore refining primer, the silicon texture helps provide a smoother surface so your foundation won’t seep into the pores. *Tip* pat this into the skin for best application.
Best Luminising Primer: Estée Lauder The Illuminator Radiant Perfecting Primer £25
I may have oily skin but a girl can still dream of ultra-dewy skin sans greasy shine. Truthfully, my skin can sensitise quickly (I have all the luck, huh?) so I need some help when it’s a little drier. There are loads of luminous primers out there but what I love most about the Estée Lauder one is that it gives you the longevity that some other luminating primers lack. Like Scottish Summers, promising for a few hours but no follow through. I like to apply this all over my forehead and cheeks, anywhere that needs a little boost. *Tip* there’s a beautiful pearlescent finish to this so great for wearing under makeup or alone for a quick pick me up.
Best Affordable Primer: NYX Studio Perfect Primer £10.50
When it comes to affordable makeup brands NYX is the Beyoncé among a sea of Michelles in my opinion. Their stuff is incredible and I’ve been fortunate to only have good experiences thus far. I know as well as anyone that whilst we all love our high-end brands, sometimes the agony of having to wait to pay day can get a little too much so it’s always worth having that trusty drug store backup to tie you over. Luckily with NYX you don’t have to sacrifice. This primer is incredible. A fantastic dupe for the Smashbox primer, this is my go to for under work makeup. Easy to apply and what’s better, if you go through it quickly it won’t hurt your soul to pick up a tube before pay day – result! *Tip* This one is a little more runny than Smashbox so you’ll find less goes further. Same applies as before though, pat into the skin around oily areas.
Hope you find this useful, let me know your experiences with these or any other primers you swear by in the comments below.
